Stays With Stories
  • Sorell: Iron Creek Bay Estate proudly protects two certified Aboriginal Heritage sites located around Flinty Point. A stone quarry, where materials were procured for the purpose of making stone tools and artefacts. And a significant shell midden - stratified deposits of refuse from shellfish and other food remains, predominantly oysters and mussels. The estate was originally established by the Denholm family whose history with the area goes back four generations, having initially settled in 1834. The property was originally named ORARI after the ship that brought back soldiers from WW1 but a spelling mistake somewhere along the way, found it called ORANI. Rural activities were mixed farming – sheep, wool and meat cattle and during Ronald Bilton Denholm’s times, dairying was mainstay. A local doctor, Mr Schofield, bought the farm from the Denholms and ran cattle on it until his family sold it to a company that put in the Riesling and pinot grapes and produced a good German style Riesling. Mr Tao from Shanghai purchased the land in 2016 and built Iron Creek Bay Estate to welcome visitors to this unique part of Tasmania. Also, determined to expand the site’s agricultural production, Mr. Tao planted 10,000 cherry trees consisting of Lapin, Simone, Van and Ranier varieties as well as strawberries, plums, apples and apricots for both export and the local market as well as grapes for locally produced wine.

Day 2 - The Picturesque East Coast
Begin your day breathing in the scent of lavender on a decadent, sensory experience at Bridestowe Lavender Estate, producer of high-quality lavender since 1922. On your tour with a Local Specialist discover the farm that produces one of the only single flower honeys in the world and watch the oil extraction process that dates back to the 1920s - paying tribute to the farm’s inspiration from the lavender fields of southern France. Treat yourself to a homemade lavender ice cream, when in season, stroll the fragrant fields, and time-travel viewing vintage memorabilia in the Old Tractor Shed. Continue to Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees site, a tribute to the brave Tasmania soldiers who lost their lives in World War I, to stroll along the avenue of trees and delve into the role the ANZAC soldiers played at Gallipoli. Spend lunchtime in St. Helens before following the picturesque East Coast to Bicheno. Tonight, take a short walk down to the water's edge to view Little Penguins in their natural environment.

Sure to be a highlight of your Tasmanian getaway and the best way to view the area, you’ll take to the water for a four-hour cruise around the breathtaking Freycinet Peninsula. You’ll then pull into the pristine waters of Wineglass Bay lined by white sand, where you’ll anchor for a ploughman's lunch. This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience contributes to wildlife preservation. Soak in the peaceful scenery while learning about and keeping on wildlife watch for sea eagles, pods of bow-surfing dolphins, cormorants, seals lazing on granite boulders, and even migrating humpback and Southern Right whales breaching on the turquoise waters. Back on dry land, drive through dry eucalypt forests to Cape Tourville where you’ll stretch your legs and take in the views of blue water and golden beaches. Day 4 - A Night on a Farm
This morning, the GPS is set for the historic township of Richmond; explore the convict-built goal and bridge or browse the quaint boutique shops in town. Next, visit Risdon Cove for one of our MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experiences. Kipli Takara (meaning food walk) is an immersive experience where you are invited to walk the culturally rich landscape with palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) guides across this abundant natural pantry that was returned to Tasmanian Aboriginal ownership in 1995. You will be treated to a guided walk of this unique property, hearing about the history and current story of the area. Along the way you can taste the native bush tucker currently in season and get a first-hand glimpse into how palawa continue to enjoy cultural foods and undertake culturally centred land management across lutruwita/Tasmania. This experience includes a unique tasting of local, native flavours. Now, want to disconnect from technology, and reconnect with Mother Nature? You’ve come to the right place. To the northeast of Hobart near Sorell, Iron Creek Bay Farm comes with seclusion and style to spare. This is your base for the night, and what calming treasures await. This working farm features a range of design-driven accommodation, all enveloped by 70 hectares of orchards growing cherries, apricots, apples and grapes. You’re invited to pick fruits during your stay, whether on your own or during a guided tour – while you wander the grounds, you’ll likely meet resident geese, turkeys, ducks, chickens, sheep, alpacas, horses and white-bellied sea eagles. The food here heroes Tassie produce in all its glory, whether it's local seafood or from the surrounding farmland, it doesn't get any fresher than this.
